Emmy and Grammy Award-winning comedian, actor, author, producer and philanthropist Tiffany Haddish is the featured speaker at this semester’s “Salon Series” hosted by California State University, Northridge’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
The Salon Series is scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, in the Zev Yaroslavsky Rehearsal Room inside The Soraya Performing Arts Center, located at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.
Yan Searcy, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, said this year’s event follows a trend of speakers who connect with students beyond just their high-profile status.
“The Salon Series is now reflective of an expectation that CSUN connects those with celebrity profiles to the Matador community with high level conversations about how life journeys may be different but still share the common interwoven thread of focus, preparation, talent, opportunity, persistence, and intentionality,” Searcy said.
Known for her magnetic humor and candid storytelling, Haddish brings a distinctive voice shaped by resilience, creativity and a remarkable journey from adversity to international acclaim.
“Ms. Haddish’s life journey resonates with our students, particularly as a Los Angeles-raised person who has experienced the child welfare system,” Searcy said. “This child welfare connection is shared with a number of current Matadors. In fact, Ms. Haddish will spend time with the EOP Milt & Debbie Valera Resilient Scholars Program prior to the event.”
The Salon Series is modeled after the Harlem Renaissance Salons of the 1920s and 1930s, which celebrated African American creativity in literature, music, art and social thought. The gatherings provided intimate settings for conversations on the arts, the future and racial solidarity.
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences’ Salon Series is designed to bring together friends, communities, alumni, faculty, staff and students for informative and sometimes provocative conversations and to support the creation of the Community Endowed Professorship in Africana Studies.
The purpose for the Community Endowed Professorship in Africana Studies is to have an academic with office hours to meet the needs of students, as well as to become a role model and resource for members of the community. Their responsibilities will include serving as a liaison between CSUN’s Department of Africana Studies and the community and to encourage young people to attend college.
