“Here we are. Our first baby,” said Alvarez. “We just want him to try his best. I hope he knows that we’re always going to be here for him.”

Settling in and looking forward to the new year.

About 1,000 new freshmen are settling into their new homes this week at the University Park Apartments and Suites on the north side of campus. Saturday, Aug. 24 was move-in day for many students, who arrived toting suitcases, comfy pillows and mini-fridges. Many of them also brought their brave-faced moms and dads who were ready to lend a hand, but perhaps not so ready for the “goodbyes” at the end of the busy day. Among them were 18-year-old Jose Garcia, a freshman theatre arts major from Oxnard, who arrived with his mom, Gloria Alvarez; dad, Jose Garcia and aunt, Maria Garcia, who helped him move in. “I want to be here every weekend, but then I think no, I’m going to have to try to let him settle,” said Alvarez. “I need to let him fly with his own wings.” Check out highlights from the day, in photos.
