Below is a list of the individuals whose work was recognized from August 2024 through December 2024.

Scott Andrews (English) presented “Dead Cowboys and Living NDNs: A Visit to the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art” at the annual meeting of the Western Literature Association in Tucson, Arizona, Oct. 3-5, 2024. The presentation applied concepts from Gerald Vizenor’s book “Fugitive Poses: Native American Scenes of Absence and Presence” to the galleries of the James Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Wendy Ashley (Social Work) published a book entitled “Merging Clinical Social Work Practice and Antiracist Positioning: How to be a Clinically Sound, Social Work Practitioner” in July 2024. 

Peter Edmunds (Biology) appeared on an episode of the podcast “BioScience Talks” on Aug. 28. He discussed his article entitled “Why keep monitoring coral reefs?” which focuses on long term coral reef and ecological monitoring.

Rick Mitchell‘s (English) play, “Flickering Paradise: A Caribbean Fábula” was presented by Highways Performance Space, Santa Monica, on Oct. 4 and 5. The new dark comedy was presented as a workshop production by Highways Performance Space, in association with Urban Ensemble Theater Collective.

Ric Alviso (Music), professor of music, performed with his group, Masanga Marimba, composed entirely of CSUN music alumni, at Harvest Moon [charity concert] on Oct. 5 with Neil Young, Stephen Stills and John Mayer. Malanga Marimba will also perform as part of the 65th Annual LA County Holiday Celebration on Christmas Eve, December 24th, from 3-6 p.m. at the Music Center Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The program will also be televised and streamed live on PBS, channel 28. 

Sepideh Abolghasem Ghazvini (Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management) has received $167,485 from the United States Department of Energy, in support of a project entitled “Advancing Automated Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP): Leveraging AI for Machining Process Selection Considering Part Geometry and Manufacturing Cost.”

Eduardo Amorim (Biology) has received $350,437 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Characterizing Human-Pathogen Interactions and Natural Selection with Ancient DNA.”

Alyssa Arentoft (Psychology) has received $55,134 from the University of North Texas, Health Science Center, in support of a project entitled “The Health and Aging Brain Study – Health Disparities (HABS-HD)” and $68,682 from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in support of a project entitled “Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI-4).”

Wendy Ashley (Social Work) has received $2,587,718 from the University of California, Los Angeles, in support of a project entitled “CalSWEC Title IV-E Training Program for 2024-26.”

Debra Berry Malmberg (Psychology), Zhen Chai (Special Education), and Vickie Yu (Communication Disorders and Sciences) have received $249,839 from the United States Department of Education, in support of a project entitled “The Bridge Project: Transdisciplinary Preparation of Culturally Responsive Early Childhood Special Educators, Behavior Interventionists, and Speech and Language Pathologists to Serve Young Children with Disabilities.”

Annette Besnilian (Marilyn Magaram Center) has received $54,340 from the El Nido Family Centers, in support of a project entitled “El Nido Family Centers Nutrition Outreach and Education.”

Robert Carpenter (Biology) has received $145,556 from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in support of a project entitled “LTER: MCR IV: Long-Term Dynamics of a Coral Reef Ecosystem.”

Mary Cecil (Geological Sciences) has received $190,957 from the National Science Foundation, in support of a project entitled “COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: Development of Topography in the Northern Sierra Nevada: Reconciling Potential Differences in Sierran Uplift History and Causes Through a Range-Wide, Multi-Source Thermochronologic Dataset.”

Zhen Chai (Special Education) has received $249,342 from the United States Department of Education, in support of a project entitled “Project CREATE: Preparing Culturally Responsive Early Educators in Teacher Education.”

Gary Chapman (Physics and Astronomy) and Debi Prasad Choudhary (Physics and Astronomy) have received $100,082 from the University of Colorado, in support of a project entitled “An Automated Framework for Robust Image Proxies and Data-Driven Exploration of their Relationship with Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) and Solar Spectral Irradiance (SSI).”

Gabriela Chavira (Undergraduate Research (OUR)) has received $49,519 from the California State University, Stanislaus, in support of a project entitled “IGE: Track 2: The California State University Well-Being Alliance for Research Masters (CSU WARM).”

Gabriela Chavira (Undergraduate Research (OUR)) and Crist Khachikian (Civil Engineering and Construction Management) have received $698,559 from the National Science Foundation, in support of a project entitled “HSI Institutional Transformation Project: Creating Opportunities for Minoritized Students to Participate in Faculty Mentored Research.”

Peter Edmunds (Biology) has received $145,556 from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in support of a project entitled “LTER: MCR IV: Long-Term Dynamics of a Coral Reef Ecosystem.”

Merav Efrat (Health Sciences) has received $400,000 from the United States Department of Agriculture, in support of a project entitled “Recruiting and Preparing Underrepresented Students for Careers as Certified Lactation Counselors.”

Rafi Efrat (Bookstein Institute), Sara Berzenski (Psychology), and Merav Efrat (Health Sciences) have received $663,312 from the State of California, in support of a project entitled “The CSU 5+ VITA Initiative” and $530,000 from the United States Department of Treasury, in support of a project entitled “The CSUN VITA Program.”

Maria Elizondo (Student Affairs, Office of the Vice President) has received $135,000 from California State University, Chico, in support of a project entitled “CalFresh Healthy Living on College Campuses (CSUN CFHL On Campus).”

Michael Eller (Chemistry and Biochemistry) has received $248,300 from the Brookhaven National Laboratory, in support of a project entitled “Angstrom Era Semiconductor Patterning Material Development Accelerator.”

Xóchitl Flores-Marcial (Chicana/o Studies) was a guest speaker at the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato, Mexico on Oct. 20. She spoke about 2500 years of Zapotec writing and Indigenous intellectual history, based on her research.

Mallory Furnier (Collection Access and Management Services) has received $29,000 from the University of California, Irvine, in support of a project entitled “El Rescate + CSUN: Community Engagement with Archival Description and Processing.”

Mario Giraldo (Geography and Environmental Studies) has received $79,607 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, in support of a project entitled “Collaboration in Big Data Analysis and Open Science Studying OceanFronts, Salinity and Climate Systems in Coastal North America.”

Shu-Sha Guan (Child and Adolescent Development), Yolanda Vasquez-Salgado (Psychology), Carrie Saetermoe (Psychology), and Cindy Malone (Biology) have received $452,923 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Educational Modules to Broaden Academic Research Cultures (EMBARC).”

Cedric Hackett (Africana Studies and Dubois-Hamer Institute) has received $8,850 from the Los Angeles Unified School District, in support of a project entitled “Enrichment Workshops” and $23,000 from the Los Angeles Unified School District, in support of a project entitled “LAUSD-BSAP-2023 – CSUN African American Alliance with Alfred Nobel Middle School.”

Xudong Jia (Engineering & Computer Science, Office of the Dean) has received $400,000 from the University of California, Los Angeles, in support of a project entitled “Climate Action – Community-Driven Electric Vehicle Charging Solution (CA-CLEAN).”

Amy Levin (Research and Sponsored Programs) and Charlene Manzueta (Research and Sponsored Programs) have received $53,000 from the National Science Foundation, in support of a project entitled “Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP).”

Bingbing Li (Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management), Jamie Booth (Mechanical Engineering), Vinicius Maron (Mechanical Engineering), and Christoph Schaal (Mechanical Engineering) have received $212,753 from the United States Department of Defense, in support of a project entitled “Nondestructive Evaluation of Additively Manufactured Functional Metals with Micro-Scale Precision.”

Allen Lipscomb (Social Work) and Jolene Swain (Social Work) have received $388,375 from the University of California, Berkeley, in support of a project entitled “CalSWEC Public Behavioral Health Training Program.”

Jason Lo (Mathematics) has received $187,549 from the United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research, in support of a project entitled “Reasoning in Autonomous Systems Via Wiring Diagrams.”

Mariano Loza Coll (Biology) has received $147,500 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Genetic Interactions Among Targets of Master Regulator Genes as Drivers of Complex Behavior in Drosophila Intestinal Stem Cells.”

Juana Maria Valdivia (Student Outreach and Recruitment) and Monica Jimenez (Educational Opportunity Program) have received $324,979 from the United States Department of Education, in support of a project entitled “Upward Bound – San Fernando Valley North Central.”

Kathleen Marsaglia (Geological Sciences) has received $7,974 from Columbia University, in support of a project entitled “U.S. Science Support Program Office Associated with the International Ocean Discovery Program (USSSP-IODP).”

Jonathan Martinez (Psychology) has received $181,250 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Co-Developing a Psychoeducational Mental Health Toolkit for Underserved Families to Navigate the Mental Health System.”

Timothy Matthews (Environmental and Occupational Health) has received $15,000 from the University of California, Los Angeles, in support of a project entitled “Do long working hours increase the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality? Evidence from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey 1997-2015.”

Loren Naidoo (Management) and Cristina Rubino (Management) have received $250,000 from Community Investment for Families, in support of a project entitled “FamilySource System Evaluation 2024-2025.”

Linda Rader Overman (English) recently spent time in France to honor the World War II behind-the-scenes work of her father, Office of Strategic Services (OSS) photographer, Bill Rader who was in the John Ford Field Photo Branch. Overman was tasked by the OSS Society President to award the OSS Congressional Gold Medal of Honor to the town of Lons-le Saunier, to the Museum of Resistance and Deportation of Besançon, and to the Association for the Children of the Resistance (PEDR) in La Motte commemorating her father’s photographic work at the time. Overman even made the French newspapers in the region.

Radha Ranganathan (Physics and Astronomy) has received $108,750 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Intrinsic Curvature Induced Packing Heterogeneity and Non-Uniform Distribution of Cholesterol and Abeta Peptide in Lipid Bilayers.”

Luca Ricci (Physics and Astronomy) has received $101,879 from the Space Telescope Science Institute, in support of a project entitled “Investigating the Disk-Planet Interaction in the HD 163296 System with JWST.”

Lea Richardson (Biology) and Jeremy Yoder (Biology) have received $367,561 from the National Park Foundation, in support of a project entitled “Creating Science-Based Strategies to Preserve Saguaro and Other Iconic Desert Species Impacted by Climate Change.”

Emily Russell (Child and Adolescent Development) has received $104,223 from Jumpstart Inc, in support of a project entitled “Jumpstart Northridge.”

Mirna Sawyer (Institute of Community Health and Wellbeing) has received $16,840 from the Dignity Health (Northridge Hospital), in support of a project entitled “Disaster Literacy to Advance Community Emergency & Disaster Readiness in Los Angeles County.”

Christoph Schaal (Mechanical Engineering) has received $40,000 from the Aerospace Corporation, in support of a project entitled “Concept Development of an Experimental Payload for In-Space Inspection of Bonded Joints.”

Joshua Schwartz (Geological Sciences) has received $36,375 from the California Department of Conservation, in support of a project entitled “Geochronology of Southern California Plutonic Rocks.”

Joshua Schwartz and Elena Miranda (Geological Sciences) have received $760,299 the National Science Foundation, in support of a project entitled “Is it MASH or MUSH? Testing Conflicting Models for Magma Diversification and Mobilization in Lower-Arc Crust.”

Khanum Shaikh (Women’s Studies) has received a $60,000 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to write a book entitled “Moving Through Culture: Gender and Urban Transformation in Contemporary Pakistan.”

Dong-Ning Sheng (Physics and Astronomy), Nicholas Kioussis (Physics and Astronomy), and Yang Peng (WM Keck Computational Materials Theory Center) have received $524,172 from the National Science Foundation, in support of a project entitled “MRI: Track 1 Acquisition of an Advanced Beowulf Cluster for Quantum Information and Materials Research and Education.”

Yohannes Shiferaw (Physics and Astronomy) has received $147,500 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Multi-Scale Computational Modeling of Calmodulin Mutations Associated with CPVT.”

Samantha Toews (Special Education) and Fatmana Deniz (Special Education) have received $249,332 from the United States Department of Education, in support of a project entitled “Reconceptualizing Educator Preparation to Empower All Students Through Culturally Sustaining and High Leverage Inclusive Teaching.”

Claudia Toledo-Corral (Health Sciences) has received $178,667 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Allostatic Load in Latino Youth (ALLY) study: The Role of Discrimination and Environmental Racism” and $142,031 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Postdoctoral Training Supplement for R16GM146675.”

Houssam Toutanji (Center for Engineering and Computer Science Research and Education), Xudong Jia (Center for Engineering and Computer Science Research and Education), and Ruting Jia (Electrical and Computer Engineering) have received $35,000 from California State University, Sacramento, in support of a project entitled “CSU-LSAMP STEM PATHWAYS & RESEARCH ALLIANCE (Chancellor Award)” and $12,034 for the NSF Award.

John Valdovinos (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Thomas Chan (Psychology) and Xiyi Hang (Electrical and Computer Engineering) have received $150,000 from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, in support of a project entitled “Understanding Disparities in Time-to-Drop-Off from Cardiovascular Care in Congenital Heart Disease Patients.”

Dayanthie Weeraratne and Joshua Schwartz (Geological Sciences) have received $397,842 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “Linking Offshore Seismic Tomography and Surface Volcanology to Study Subduction Termination and Controversial Lithospheric Fragm.”

Ivor Weiner (Special Education) has received $132,003 from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center, in support of a project entitled “Van Nuys Family Resource Center and Library,” $207,187 from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center, in support of a project entitled “Family Resource Center (Early Start)” and $385,481 from the California Department of Education, in support of a project entitled “Family Focus Empowerment Center.”

Claire White (Religious Studies) has received $76,853 from Washington University in St Louis, in support of a project entitled “The Persistence of Wild Religious Traditions: How the Handling of Misfortune Influences the Dynamics of Folk Religions.”

Hui Xie (Recreation and Tourism Management) has received $181,250 from the National Institutes of Health, in support of a project entitled “Senior Centers and Older Adults’ Health Outcomes.”

Jeremy Yoder (Biology) has received $57,729 from the United States Department of the Interior, in support of a project entitled “Harnessing Crowdsourced Data and Machine Learning to Identify Habitat Needs of Joshua Tree’s Specialized Pollinators.”

Hyung-Jo Yoon (Linguistics) has received $32,763 from the Pearson Education Limited, in support of a project entitled “Validating the Speaking and Writing Sections of PTE Academic: Performance and Perceptions of International Students in Freshman Writing Courses.”

Tadeh Zirakian (Civil Engineering and Construction Management) has received $489,850 from the United States Department of Defense, in support of a project entitled “Advancing Research Facilities on the Dynamics of Materials and Structures.”
