Events celebrating the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the holiday in his name will take place throughout the rest of the month both on and off the CSUN campus.

Those events include an assembly for Northridge Academy High School students by linguistics master’s degree students on the subject of linguistic justice. Later in the semester, there will be a campus tour for elementary school students. A story time for young children will take place on Jan. 31, in the faculty development commons on the garden level of the University Library at 10 a.m. The event will feature readings from storybooks focused on the life and works of Martin Luther King, Jr. The story time event is open to the public.
A signature event in the CSUN G.A.R.D.E.N. will take place on Jan. 31 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. All are invited to the program, hosted by the Institute for Sustainability. Participants will be able to take part in preparing garden beds for new planting, sowing seeds for winter crops and helping build new raised planter beds. Natalie Romeo is one of the fellows with the California Climate Action Corps who are serving with the Institute for Sustainability. Romeo spearheaded the day of service project in the garden and explained the themes of the event: food justice and sustainability.

“This is through the lens of Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community, which was really just the idea of folks of all backgrounds, of all economic conditions working together to help each other out, to fill each other’s needs, to see where they can serve,” Romeo said.
Before the work begins in the garden, Cedric Hackett, professor of Africana studies and faculty representative for CSUN Athletics, will speak about King’s life. He will perform a spoken word piece, highlighting little-known facts about the civil rights leader.
“It’s educating [people] about who Martin Luther King, Jr. was and how we commemorate him,” he explained.
This is the second year that campus organizations have received funding from the state and from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, to support events and days of service celebrating the work of Martin Luther King, Jr.
