Members of CSUN’s Zero Waste team leveled up this fall in their efforts to advance a circular economy on campus, with the university’s first-ever Matador Move-In Circular Giveaway. University Park residents were invited to a “yard sale” of sorts during Freshman Housewarming festivities, Aug. 20-22, to browse a variety of school essentials collected during last spring’s May Move-Out. School supplies, lamps, mirrors, toasters and microwaves were among the many things available to Matadors getting settled in their new dorm spaces — and everything was free! In all, the Zero Waste team provided 800 pounds of useful items to incoming students, and out of the landfill.

The Matador Move Out initiative began in spring 2024 — students moving out of campus housing could drop off unwanted items at collection sites, for re-distribution to Matadors in “swap-and-shop” activities. This year, organizers were able to store items over the summer, thanks to help from Parking and Transportation Services, the Residence Halls Association and the Department of Police Services to make them available during move-in — they plan to expand storage and collections to make even more available for a move-in event in 2026.
