The award-winning entertainment news site TheWrap has included California State University, Northridge among the nation’s top 50 film schools of 2025, alongside such prestigious institutions as the University of Southern California, New York University and AFI Conservatory.

TheWrap lauded CSUN’s Department of Cinema and Television Arts, saying it offered “a high-quality, industry-connected education at a state-school price.”

“At CSUN, cinema and television arts students from diverse backgrounds take advantage of a world-class film school education, are mentored by award-winning Hollywood faculty, and it all happens at an affordable price,” said Jared Rappaport, chair of the Department of Cinema and Television Arts.

The site called CSUN “the most entertainment-focused institution in the Cal State system,” and noted that it was home to the California State University Entertainment Alliance, which connects students from across all 22 CSU campuses to internships, career education and professional development.

Northridge also has its own Entertainment Industry Institute, which brings producers, directors, writers, executives and other top-tier professionals directly to campus. TheWrap noted that CSUN alumnus Dave Caplan, the co-showrunner on “The Connors,” is part of an initiative that places half a dozen underrepresented screenwriting students in internships with showrunners.

CSUN’s Department of Cinema and Television Arts, housed in the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication, has an international reputation for producing dedicated and talented entertainment industry professionals who recognize the value of hard work as they learn and continue to perfect their craft. The department currently enrolls nearly 2,000 undergraduate students and 30 students in its graduate screenwriting program. Its alumni work in all aspects of entertainment media, from writing, producing and directing to manning cameras and having the final say in what project is made. The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and TheWrap have regularly ranked CSUN among the top universities in the country for cinema and television arts education.
