History majors with an interest in teaching are eligible for a new CSUN scholarship that provides two years of support for incoming freshmen.

Kim L. Randall ’77 (History) created the endowed scholarship at California State University, Northridge in honor of her late husband, Steve Randall ’79 (History), who received his teaching credential at CSUN.

Students will be able to apply for the scholarship in their senior year of high school through the myMatador scholarship portal. Students in the Department of History’s four-year Integrated Bachelor of Arts/Teaching Credential track will receive priority. The scholarship will be awarded for the student’s freshman year and will automatically renew for a second year provided the awardee maintains a GPA of at least 2.5.

The History BA/Credential track is a collaboration between the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Michael D. Eisner College of Education. It prepares students for a career teaching History-Social Science at the middle school and/or high school level.

Why Scholarships Matter

The scholarship is a way to pay back support that made a difference in the lives of an alumni couple. Kim and Steve Randall both came from middle-class families and were able to attend college due to scholarships they received.

Kim and Steve Randall met at CSUN as history students in the 1970s, where they shared an interest in student politics. Steve was elected student body vice president, and Kim ran his campaign.

After graduating from CSUN, Steve earned his teaching credential and became a public school teacher. Kim pursued a successful career in the insurance business. Together, they cultivated a loving relationship and vibrant life together in the San Fernando Valley. Steve Randall passed away in 2009.

Scholarships for first-time freshmen give new students a strong start to their college career. CSUN students who receive scholarships as freshmen are more likely to persist to their sophomore year and build early momentum toward graduation.

The first Steven G. and Kim L. Randall History Scholarship for Future Teachers will be awarded for the 2027-28 academic year.

How Philanthropy Helps CSUN Students

CSUN is one of the most impactful public universities in California. The thoughtful, generous gifts of CSUN’s philanthropic supporters create life-changing opportunities for our students. These gifts provide scholarships, mentorship, academic spaces, hands-on learning experiences, and many other opportunities that help CSUN students succeed now and in their lives after college. If you would like to support the Steven G. & Kim L. Randall History Scholarship Endowment for Future Teachers or create a fund of your own, please contact us at development@csun.edu.
