Patrisse Cullors, the co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Movement, will be doing a Question & Answer webinar on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m., for CSUN students, faculty and staff. Now the opportunity to join the conversation is open to CSUN alumni.
Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is a major focus for organizations and society as a whole, and this Q&A presents an opportunity to learn from one of the most foremost figures in this global movement. Alumni — and students, faculty and staff — can register for the event and submit questions to be answered.
Cullors, an artist, educator and author, co-wrote the book “When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir.” It was selected as CSUN’s 2021-22 common reading book for incoming freshmen in the University 100 introductory class. Each year, the freshman common reading material is chosen by a committee made up of CSUN faculty members, staff, and students. In order for a book to be selected, it must meet the following criteria: range of interdisciplinary context, diverse cultural and social perspectives, promotion of intellectual growth, encouragement of discussion in a variety of courses, and how it addresses significant topics.
Cullors was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2020. She began the Black Lives Matter movement with a hashtag in 2013 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin. The movement has since expanded to a global foundation. Cullors has led Los Angeles-based organizations, such as Dignity and Power Now, Justice LA, and Reform LA Jails.
She will also be the keynote speaker at CSUN’s New Student Convocation, which begins at 6 p.m.
