The University Library at California State University, Northridge is hosting the Gohstand Leisure Reading Room Lecture Series featuring educator and literacy advocate Maryanne Wolf, author of “Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World,” who will examine the constant digital engagement that can undermine deep reading, empathy, and critical thinking.

The presentation, which will explore how digital technology is reshaping human cognition, will take place on Wednesday, April 29, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Robert and Maureen Gohstand Leisure Reading Room on the second floor of the University Library located in the heart of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. Northridge.

“At a time when we are all navigating constant digital engagement, her neuroscience‑grounded research offers a pathway forward,” said Emy Decker, Dean of the University Library. “This visit feels especially timely, and I’m looking forward to the conversations it will spark among students, faculty, and colleagues across disciplines.”

Wolf is a scholar, teacher and advocate for children and literacy around the world. She is the director of the Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice at UCLA’s School of Education and Information Studies. She is a former John DiBiaggio Professor of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University. She has authored over 170 scientific publications, including “Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain,” “Tales of Literacy for the 21st Century” and “Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital Culture.” She co-authors naming speed tests, a universal predictor of dyslexia, and is the creator of the RAVE-O Intervention Program for all struggling readers.

Wolf has received multiple awards for her contributions to the neuroscience of reading, including major awards from the International Dyslexia Association and the Einstein Award from the Dyslexia Foundation for her dyslexia research, and the Walter Ong Award and the Alfred Korzybski Award for her work on the effects of different mediums on the intellectual development of the species. Most recently, she was elected a permanent member of the Pontifical Academy of Science.
