California State University, Northridge is partnering with the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education to conduct the Propel Regional Training for news editors and managers across the state on Oct. 22-24 in Burbank.
Propel Regional Training is a tuition-free program that brings two-and-a-half days of editing and management training, coaching and community-building to journalists of all backgrounds working across California’s diverse media outlets and platforms.
CSUN’s Department of Journalism and Tom & Ethel Bradley Center have partnered with the Maynard Institute to provide journalists with the tools they need to succeed amid the complexities of news leadership. The training is for frontline, mid-career and student editors and managers working in any platform (print, broadcast, digital and audio). The training will be facilitated in English.
Faculty and panelists include award-winning editors, news leaders, professors and Maynard leaders of Latino, African American, Asian American and Pacific Islander and LGBTQIA+ and other diverse backgrounds. They will provide hands-on workshops and customized coaching to help news leaders effectively manage teams, news coverage, and build resilience.
The curriculum includes sessions on “The Manager’s Toolkit in an Era of Disruption;” “Editing Techniques You Need Everyday;” “Managing the Big Project:” “Immigration, ICE Coverage and Imperiled Civil Rights;” “Harnessing AI Ethically in Sourcing and Editing;” “Fault Lines® in Management/Editing;” “The Power of Community-Centered, Student-led Journalism;” and “Navigating Difficult Conversations.”
The training will conclude with a regional news leaders panel discussing the state of the media across California, frameworks for sustainability, and building stronger newsrooms fighting for integrity and belonging, amid assaults on civil liberties and AI acceleration.
Two meals will be provided each day, with limited discounted hotel rooms and needs-based travel assistance.
The training will take place over the course of three days. From 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 23, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel.
