Ever Huerta, a member of California State University, Northridge’s class of 2028, and a history major with a minor in political science, has been named a member of the 2026–27 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows by Campus Compact, a national coalition of colleges and universities working to advance the public purposes of higher education.
Huerta had long been involved in his own community before he arrived at CSUN. His commitment to civic engagement began in student government at Dolores Huerta Middle School and continued at John Burroughs High School, where he served as student body president and led initiatives celebrating cultural heritage and promoting a more inclusive school community.
Huerta went on to represent student voices as a board member of the Burbank Unified School District and the city of Burbank’s Youth Board. He continued his community service through leadership roles with such organizations as Burbank Pride, Elevate Burbank and the Burbank Democratic Club, while also supporting local campaigns and expanding opportunities for youth civic participation.
“I am a proud resident of Burbank where I was born and raised, going through the school system here,” Huerta said. “I have been given many opportunities to get involved and make an impact in my community starting all the way back in middle school.”
CSUN President Erika Beck praised Huerta for his efforts to strengthen community engagement and dedicated public service.
“Ever Huerta, a student at California State University, Northridge, is a civic leader dedicated to public service, community engagement, and inclusive leadership,” Beck said. “Currently at CSUN, he serves as vice president of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) and mentors first-generation, low-income students through TRIO and Upward Bound, while working as a teaching intern to support education and community empowerment.”
Campus Compact named students from 39 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico who will form the 2026-2027 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.
Named for the late Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact and advocate for civic engagement in higher education, the year-long fellowship offers a variety of learning and networking opportunities designed to help equip fellows with the skills and connections they need to forge large-scale positive change in the community. One student per university is eligible for the national award.
The cornerstone of the fellowship is the Annual Convening of Newman Civic Fellows, which offers intensive in-person skill-building and networking over three days. The fellowship also provides pathways to apply for exclusive opportunities, including mini grants to help fund community projects, scholarships, and post-graduate opportunities.
