Student choreographers and dancers will present diverse visions and passion for the art of dance at California State University, Northridge’s annual dance performance, “Kinesis: Emerging Choreography,” later this month.
The concert will feature dances, ranging from contemporary to hip-hop that reflect current social concerns as well as the opportunity to celebrate the pure joy of dancing. Performances are scheduled to take place at the Plaza Del Sol Performance Hall off Zelzah Avenue near the University Student Union on Wednesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, April 23, at 2 p.m., with the final performance expected to take place at 7:30 p.m. on April 23.
“Kinesis” provides a glimpse into the art and life that continues to occur at CSUN,” said CSUN dance professor Paula Thomson, who teaches at the College of Health and Human Development.
Thomson defined “Kinesis” as “the combination of form and the sensation of movement.
“Dance at its best does just that,” Thompson said. “Both dancer and audience viscerally experience movement and sense the coherent form inherent in good choreography.”
She said the showcase will do just that, noting that it will spotlight many of the university’s “talented dancers and choreographers.”
At the final show, dance scholarships will be awarded to four CSUN dancers. The Joan and Paul Waller Dance Scholarship will be awarded to one student dancer and three students will be awarded with Dance Forward Scholarships.
Tickets are available for students and community members at the Associated Students Ticket Office located in the USU plaza. For more information on ticketing, call (818) 677- 2488.
